ABS-CBN stops its broadcast operations today after the National Telecommunications Commission released a cease and desist order against them. Their legislative franchise expired last May 4.
The order was dated May 5th, directing ABS-CBN to cease operations fo boh radio and TV broadcast operations nationwide “absent a valid Congressional Franchise required by law.”
Radio Control Law or Republic Act No. 3846 was referenced for such order, stating that: “no person, firm, company, association, or corporation shall construct, install, establish, or operate a radio transmitting station, or radio receiving station used for commercial purposes, or a radio broadcasting station, without having first obtained a franchise therefor from the Congress of the Philippines.”
Therefore, when RA 7966 granting ABS-CBN 25 years of franchise operations for their TV and radio stations expires, ABS-CBN no longer has valid franchise as required by RA 3846.
