The last time South Africa won is in 2017 when Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters slayed the competition from the get-go. In 2018, Tamaryn Green was Catriona Gray’s runner-up.

South Africa stood out, sporting her short hair, pretty face and golden dark skin. In her closing statement, she said these powerful words:

“I grew up in a world where women who look like me – with my kind of skin and my kind of hair – were never considered to be beautiful. And I think that it is time, that it stops today… I want children to look at me and see my face, and I want them to see their faces reflected in mine.”
