Palaw'an Tribe and Ibong Adarna Inspires Binibining Pilipinas Candidate Samantha Bernardo's National Costume

In Samantha Bernardo’s second attempt to win a crown at Binibining Pilipinas, she leaves nothing to chance. Nothing – not even her national costume.

Her national costume designer Patrick Isorena drew inspirations from the Ibong Adarna folklore and Palaw’an tribe.

In her Instagram, Samantha described Ibong Adarna as an eponymous magical bird that has been a fixture at the world of Philippine literature.

The costume which prominently features golden feathers is a nod to the legendary bird’s shiny long tail. The two fans which is a big part of the costume is fashioned after the colorful wings of the Adarna.

Samantha who hails from Palawan wants to take his province with her in this journey. The 10,000 wooden beads covering the bodice of the national costume references the Palaw’an tribe of Palawan.

Looking further into the details, Bernardo’s earrings are designed after gongs, the very instruments used by the umalohokan (crier) to get the attention of barangay at the early parts of the Philippine history.
