In a letter addressed to “Philippine Candidate to Miss Universe 2018” Miss Catriona Elisa Magnayon Gray, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines lauds the effort of Gray to showcase Philippine history in her national costume.
Chairman of Natural Historical Commission, Dr. Rene R. Escalante invites Catriona to grace the unveiling of the National Quincentennial Committee logo on December 21.
The National Quincentennial Committee is a “commemoration of the 500th anniversaries of the Circumnavigation of the World, the introduction of Christianity to the Philippines and the Victory at Mactan.” The committee is formed by virtue of Executive Order No. 55, signed by Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte.
Escalante expressed the committee’s desire to display Gray’s National Costume in an exhibit at the following museums managed by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines:
Museum of the Philippine Social History in Angeles city
Museum of Philippine Political History in Malolos, Bulacan
Museo ni Emilio Aguinaldo in Kawit, Cavite
Museo ni Jose Rizal in Fort Santiago
The commission cites the historical accuracy of Gray’s costume as it featured the tattoos of the 16th Century Visayan warriors as found in the Boxer Codex, a historical manuscript. The costume is consistent with the theme of the NQC which is 500 Years of Valor and Victory.
